I'm a little confused - is dark chocolate allowed or not? I've seen many member's talking about eating it, yet they don't specify whether it is sugar-free dark choc or standard dark choc. I bought some recently because it does have a lot less sugar than milk or other chocolate (the one I bought has 6.5 grams per serve, compared to about 30 for milk choc). I ate a serve (delicious!) and noticed I felt energised and clear and recharged for a good while after. I'm figuring this is a sugar buzz because I hadn't eaten any for 8 months prior, and I don't think it's a good thing.
Is there a definitive answer on whether dark chocolate with this amount of sugar would impair progress on the MP?
I've also noticed I get a bit of a strange reaction to yoghurt. It upsets my stomach a little, but I get some strange neurological sensations after.

Well, how much dark chocolate did you eat (number of carbohydrate grams), and how many other carbs did you get during the same ~ 2 hour period? I have limited myself to 10-20 carbs in any 2 hour period for the last 6 years and have never had a sugar high during those six years. So, when I eat dark chocolate, I read the label first and eat the appropriate number of squares, other carbs being considered.
I am not yet on the mp, still working on getting a doctor, and if this post is inappropriate because of my lack of mp experience, please moderator, just delete the whole post without comment. But I am having some remarkable things happen with complete D removal from the diet, and complete direct sun avoidance. I am quite sure that the 6 years of carb reduction has given me one heck of a head start on the mp. Will be posting about this in my own thread sometime soon.

Small amounts of chocolate as an occasional treat are okay. Some members report side effects - too varied to draw any conclusions. (Apparently dark chocolate can be used to suppress a persistent cough, whereas chocolate gives me a cough!)
If you're concerned about the sugar, find one that's sweetened with sugar alcohols such as xylitol or maltitol - but be aware of the side effects of these, and only take small amounts.

I have a question about D blood tests. Forgive me if this is written somewhere but i've read a lot of the info on D tests on the study site but don't recall reading this. What should a healthy person's D blood test results look like?

| See How often should I test D levels?, specifically under the subheading "25-D after recovery".

Hi group,
I've read the general info in regard to dairy and Vitamin D. I don't think we have too much of an issue in Australia as currently, only very few products are supplemented with D. However, I just googled butter in relation to D content, and many pages say it is a good source of D. Does anyone have any other info about this? I've been eating butter still as a flavouring for my vegetables and to cook etc. It looks like i'm going to have to give that away though
Can anyone recommend any suitable substitutes?
Many thanks for everyone's input.
Matt

I suppose it depends how much you eat. Butter has some D naturally, but not enough for most of us to worry about if you're using it on bread, but it might be wise to cut out using it on vegetables... and discover the fresh, healthy taste of real veggies!! (I'd never heard of adding butter to veggies until I discovered Americans... so you do it down under as well )
For cooking, I use olive oil.

| I know that margarine-type spreads are required to have added D in Australia. So butter is a better choice than the alternative.

Yes Julie, we're weird Down Under! Have you ever tried raw butter and salt on veggies? Delicious! I started it after having to cut most everything else out of my diet for the candida program I was doing.

Hi group,
I have a question about weight. I need to put some on but I simply cannot. I've read all the material about it but I cannot tolerate most of the foods recommended to put on weight.
Just before I started the MP I lost about 6kg's, going from 80 down to 74. This was because of about 10 days where I was unable to eat anything much. My weight has now stabilised and since starting the MP my appetite has returned with a vengeance but i'm not putting on any weight. My typical daily diet since starting MP consists of two large sausages, 4 eggs whites and two tomato's for breakfast, followed by a snack of either another sausage with cheese and tomoato, some nuts and a small bit of dark chocolate, or some strawberries, or some broth. Lunch usually consists of half a chicken or a similar amount of beef or lamb, with a big plate of steamed veggies seasoned with butter and salt. I usually have a similar snack before dinner, and dinner is usually something similar to lunch. I sometimes need another snack after dinner, usually a big handful or two of mixed nuts. This seems an awful lot of food to be consuming without putting on any weight, and i've been eating this way for about 3 weeks now.
Has anyone expeirenced anything similar? Any explanations why this is happening? I asked my doc and he's not sure. I know some people struggle when coming from the pre-MP diets to a low-carb one, but i've been on a low-carb diet for 8 months prior to this. I'm also not exercising at all, i'm fairly house-bound these days.
Any tips will be appreciated. I am currently underweight and want to put some on while my appetite is back so I can buffer any issues with low appetite in the future. If I lost any more weight I would start looking very sick. My girlfriend already complains of being able to feel my ribs! I can't really tolerate dairy, only small amounts of cheese and milk. Nuts and dark chocolate seems to be ok as a snack with plenty of calories, but i'm concerned about the effect on my immune system, although it is the lowest sugar conent i've found on the market. I am loving sausages right now too, but they don't seem to be helping with my weight despite the high calories. Should I just eat even more still?
Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
This is an area where I have no experience, as I have the opposite problem But I would just say that low-carb doesn't mean no carb. I think some bread or rice might be a good thing. Getting most of your calories from protein foods and fats is not good.
But really, I think you need to relax and give your body a chance to heal. It's going through major hormonal adjustments which may play havoc with your appetite and metabolism for a while, but give it time to settle down.
See I'm losing weight. What should I do?

Hello Matt
MHsuggestion is give it time.
You’ll never experience the fluid related monthly weight rise and fall that some young women get, but you may have experienced another fluid based phenomenon that I only guess exists from my experience on an anti-Candida one year program.
You say you lost 6Kg presumably in or before August, did that happen fairly fast? I was puzzled by losing a few kilos in a week and thought ‘that simply does not happen, it is too fast’ also I was eating very well, but absolutely no sugar and had done 3 months with no fruit at all.
I guessed at the time that perhaps my body had been holding extra intracellular fluid to dilute unfriendly substances that disappeared during my compliance to the above program. If this is possible, then the release could account for fast weight loss.
Perhaps you are replacing fluid with substance at present and will start to gain slowly. As long as you are eating more calories than you are using up, it will show eventually!
There is a hint that comes from research on TV watchers. Keep your nut eating away from your normal meals and eat nuts while watching television. Apparently the TV watching brain is slow to signal ‘enough’ and so people who eat in front of the TV often gain weight. I'm a monument to that method and had to take my fatigue slumps away from the TV when there was food ab ut

Thanks Sally and Julia for your replies. Perhaps the fuild retention thing could explain it a little but it doesn't explain why i'm not putting any weight on with all the calories i'm consuming.
Anyway, I have another question. I've picked the best time to start the MP because in Australia daylight savings starts this weekend and it already feels like summer! There was a hint of sarcasm in there....Anyway, it's 35 degrees celcius today and i'm wondering whether the heat will trigger production of 1,25D? Have any other aussies found you need to increase Benicar dosing on hot days? I'm indoors with blinds drawn etc, but it's hot and i'm sweating and we don't have air-conditioning.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi group,
I spent almost an entire day outside yesterday (unavoidable, need to find somewhere to live) and have been expecting a flare in symptoms. It's now almost 24hrs since the last exposure to light and i'm doing pretty well. I had some insomnia last night, but no worse than other nights. I noticed an increase in intra-cranial pressure (heavy-headedness) this morning, but not more than other days. I was very careful to cover up all my skin, wore a hooded top to cover my head as much as possible, and took Benicar q4h for the last 24hrs. My face was still exposed to daylight, and at times to brief direct sunlight. But I was outside or in a car for about 7 hours straight. I thought the symptoms would have gotten worse by now. Does this mean perhaps i'm not a candidate for the MP?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
It can take a long time to lower your D levels to the point where you will start to feel any improvements. You have maybe not been avoiding D and light long enough yet to notice any benefits.
Once a person starts the MP the Olmesartan can rapidly change things and for myself I became very light sensitive very quickly. Blinds were not enough I had to totally black out my entire house. I had no A/C either but a couple of cheap desk and ceiling fans helped me a lot.

That was something I thought of too, perhaps my D levels aren't down low enough and I was getting some palliative effects from the sun. However, I didn't think that would be the case as I have been diligently on the MP for nearly six weeks so my 1,25D shouldn't be high and stable anymore, which is the condition for the palliative effect of the sun according to the info i've read on this website.
I'm certain i've been experiencing some herx so i'm sure the MP is working for me, just a little confused about my lack of reaction to the sun. I'm getting my D tests done again in a couple of weeks so that will shed some light.

Matt,
If you are still suffering from insomnia then you will still have high 1-25 D.
How I sleep is a good indicator of how my 1-25 D is.
Hope that helps.
Pat.

Hi group,
I had to spend another full day in the sun last Saturday. I noticed towards the end of the day I became very depressed after a minor incident. I took a Benicar and the depression lifted within 30 min. I got home into the dark not long after and felt quite elated, almost on a high. Ive never suffered bipolar or had a manic episode and it wasn't anything like that, just felt really good.
Do you think this is due to the hormonal fluctuations caused by my 1,25D going all over the place after being in the sun? Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks,
Matt

Yes, plenty of people have experienced an increase in any or all of their symptoms (or even new symptoms) after exposure to sunlight.
When you have to be in sunlight, it is reccommended you are no more than 4 hours away from your next Benicar. Of course take all precautions to cover up, etc.
You might like to review -

I hope you've found somewhere to live, and if you haven't - that you do soon.
Take care,
Natalie

Thanks Natalie. Seems the sun flare is continuing. I've had a lot of trouble with anxiety the last two days. Feeling really keyed up, sweating, heart beat elevated, etc. When I was outside I was fully covered, wore my NoIR's, and took an umbrella to give some moderate protection for my head. I didn't think a hooded top or balaclava would impress the real estate agents! One thing I didn't do was wear sunsceen. Fortunately I now have a place and will only need a few more hours in the sun when i'm moving, but will take all precautions then including sunscreen. I always take Benicar at q4h for a day or two when i've been outside and it definitely helps.
